Frequently Asked Questions

Tried, tested and trusted. And European quality. Based in the Netherlands

Founded in 1973, Victron Energy started with providing inverters and chargers for the marine industry. This quickly expanded to the land based and automotive market. Therefore they have an unrivalled length of experience with battery storage systems. We work with Victron Energy only.

Again, tried, tested and trusted.

The vast majority of inverters are of the high frequency type. We stay away from these completely.

Victron inverters are of the low frequency type and have the advantage over high frequency inverters in two very important fields:

Peak power capacity & reliability. Low frequency inverters are designed to deal with higher power spikes for longer periods of time than high-frequency inverters.

Low frequency inverters can operate at the peak power level which is up to 300% of their nominal power level for several seconds, while high frequency inverters can operate at 200% power level for a small fraction of a second.

The second main difference is reliability: low frequency inverters operate using powerful transformers, which are more reliable and sturdy than the high frequency inverters that utilise MOSFETs. MOSFETs use electronic switching and are much more prone to damage and specifically at high power levels.

In addition to these qualities, low frequency inverters come with a vast range of technical features and capabilities that most high frequency inverters lack.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries offer many benefits compared to lead-acid batteries and other lithium batteries. Longer life span, no maintenance, extremely safe, lightweight, improved discharge and charge efficiency, just to name a few. Due to a long life span and zero maintenance, it’s the best investment one can make over time.

Manufacturers across industries turn to lithium iron phosphate for applications where safety is a factor. Lithium iron phosphate has excellent thermal and chemical stability. This battery stays cool in higher temperatures. It is also incombustible when it is mishandled during rapid charges and discharges or when there are short circuit issues. Lithium iron phosphate does not normally experience thermal runaway, as the phosphate cathode will not burn or explode during overcharging or overheating as the battery remains cool. However, the chemistry of lithium-ion does not have the same safety advantages as lithium iron phosphate. Its high energy density has the disadvantage of causing the battery to be unstable. It heats up faster during charging as a lithium-ion battery can experience thermal runaway.

Another safety advantage of lithium iron phosphate involves the disposal of the battery after use or failure. A lithium-ion battery made with a lithium cobalt dioxide chemistry is considered a hazardous material as it can cause allergic reactions to the eyes and skin when exposed. It can also cause severe medical issues when swallowed. So, special disposal considerations must be made for lithium-ion. On the other hand, lithium iron phosphate is non toxic and can be disposed of more easily by manufacturers.

Simplicity, expandability, quality and quality…all in one

A pre built and configured energy systems is brilliant. And simple.

Each of the three available units  comprise of a Victron inverter, charger, lithium iron phosphate battery, advanced battery management system(BMS) and various electronics.

All built into a very good looking unit that can be used as a standalone plug and play – or mounted and wired into an electrical distribution board.

All are expandable-for additional battery storage and the addition of photo voltaic panels.

All of the levels function as a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, unlike generators which have to be powered on, are noisy and do not provide a stable source of electricity. This can be very damaging for sensitive electronic devices such as computers.

As the power fails or load shedding occurs, you will not even notice that the all-in-one energy system has taken over. Magic. Just like that.

Yes. We stock the entire range of Victron Energy products.

From MultiPlus to Quattro Inverters. From MPPT Solar Controllers to Cerbo GX with Touch 50 Ensemble.

And with local back up, warranty and technical service at your doorstep.

We use only low frequency Victron Inverters for these reasons. We trust them and their over fifty years experience in the low frequency inverter energy business.

Getting Started

Choosing an energy system

The most important questions…

• Do you want just a back up system for when there is no power?
• Do you want a combination of photovoltaic (PV) and back up power?
• Do you want to be off the grid completely?
• Do you want to save money on your electrical bill?

These factors will determine the type and scale of system required.

And the battery size?

Think of the battery as your car fuel tank. If you have a lot of devices that draw a lot of power, you will need the correctly sized battery

Power station icon

What size inverter?

There are two factors here:

1. The first is to consider the type of appliances or devices what you want to power.
2. The second is for how long you want to power the devices for.

For example, if you would like to power lighter electronics such as computers, internet, lights and a fridge or freezer, then a smaller size inverter would be applicable.

If you would like to power an entire household, then a larger size inverter would be essential.

Think of the inverter as your car engine. If you want to tow a big caravan on a long journey with a tiny engine, it is not going to work. You won’t be able to pull the caravan. You won’t go anywhere. A more powerful engine would be needed
